Where does our Organic Coffee Beans come from?

    Location:

The Kayon Mountain Coffee Farm has been owned and operated by Ismael Hassen Aredo and his family since 2012.

It is located 510 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, and the property crosses the border of two villages—Taro and Sewana—located in the Oromia region, in the Guji zone of the Shakiso district of Ethiopia.

    Staff:

Ismael oversees a staff of 25 permanent full-time and 300 seasonal employees.

The farm management offers free transportation services as well as financial support for building schools and administration buildings for the community.

Kayon Mountain farm has a nursery on-site and utilizes shade (acacia and other indigenous trees) to protect the coffee as well as for creating compost to fertilize naturally.

    What is Organic Coffee?

Organic coffee refers to coffee that is grown and produced using organic farming methods.

This means that organic coffee is cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Instead, organic coffee farmers rely on natural and sustainable practices to nurture their coffee plants while promoting environmental stewardship and biodiversity.

    What is Heirloom Coffee?

Heirloom coffee refers to coffee plants that are grown from traditional, non-hybridized varieties that have been passed down through generations.

These varieties are often native to specific regions and have developed unique characteristics over time, including flavor profiles, resistance to pests and diseases, and adaptability to local climate conditions.

Heirloom coffee plants are typically cultivated using traditional farming methods, which may include shade-grown practices and organic farming techniques. The cultivation of heirloom coffee often emphasizes sustainability and preservation of biodiversity.

One of the key features of heirloom coffee is its diverse genetic makeup, which can lead to a wide range of flavor profiles and cup characteristics. Coffee connoisseurs often appreciate heirloom varieties for their nuanced flavors and unique qualities that reflect the regions where they are grown.

    What is Single-Origin Coffee?

Single-origin coffee comes from a specific region, farm, or even a single plot within a farm. It is prized for its unique flavor profile, which reflects the terroir—the environmental factors including soil, climate, and altitude—of the area where it was grown.

Single-origin coffee allows coffee enthusiasts to experience the distinct flavors and nuances associated with a particular coffee-growing region or farm.

Why is Single-Origin Heirloom Organic Coffee More Expensive?

Coffee blends, as opposed to Single-Origin coffee beans, may be more affordable since they can be made from a combination of beans from different origins, including less expensive varieties. Single-Origin coffees tend to be more expensive because they are harder to source.

Heirloom and organic varieties are more challenging to grow and less resistant to weather conditions and pests.

Synthetic chemicals are not used to manage these issues, resulting in farming practices that are more labor-intensive, but also better for the environment.

Why Choose Single-Source Heirloom Organic Coffee?

Overall, drinking organic heirloom coffee allows you to enjoy a high-quality, flavorful beverage while supporting sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and ethical trade practices.

Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast seeking unique flavor experiences or a conscientious consumer concerned about the environmental and social impacts of your purchasing decisions, organic heirloom coffee offers a compelling option for enjoying coffee responsibly.
